🔥 Nutrition and feeding

A typical adult Siamese needs 180 to 400 calories per day. An average male (10 lbs / 4.5 kg) needs around 300 kcal; a female (7 lbs / 3.2 kg) roughly 230 kcal.

Breed-specific note: Active breed with moderate calorie needs. Their slender build should be maintained; Siamese should look lean and elegant, not round. Amyloidosis risk (liver/kidney) means quality nutrition and adequate hydration matter. Some Siamese are prone to pica (eating non-food items); this may be stress-related or have a dietary component.

🩺 Health profile

Siamese cats are lean, vocal, and deeply social. Their health profile includes several breed-associated conditions. Amyloidosis (protein deposits in organs, primarily the liver) is one of the more serious concerns. Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) can cause gradual vision loss. Convergent strabismus (crossed eyes) and kinked tails, once common in the breed, have been largely bred out of modern lines. Respiratory infections and asthma are more frequent in Siamese than average. Life expectancy is 15 to 20 years.

🏃 Exercise and activity

Siamese cats are intelligent, social, and demanding. They need interactive play, puzzle toys, and training to channel their considerable mental energy. They can learn tricks, walk on a leash, and play fetch. They are happiest with a companion, ideally another Siamese or similarly social breed. A lone Siamese in an empty home will express their displeasure loudly and creatively.

✂️ Care and traits

Siamese cats have a short, fine, close-lying, pointed pattern (dark extremities) coat. Origin: Thailand (formerly Siam).

Among the most vocal cat breeds; Siamese will 'talk' to you constantly with a distinctive, loud voice. They're highly social and prone to separation anxiety if left alone. One of the oldest recognized cat breeds, with a history in Thai royal courts. Modern 'show-style' Siamese have an extreme wedge-shaped head; 'traditional' or 'apple-head' Siamese have a rounder, more moderate appearance.

The Siamese is well-suited for families with children. They are typically patient and tolerant, though all cat-child interactions should be supervised until children learn appropriate handling. Teaching children to respect the cat's space and body language prevents most problems.

Frequently asked questions

A healthy adult Siamese requires 180 to 400 calories per day. An average individual at 10 lbs falls near the middle of that range. Two measured meals daily keeps most medium cats at a healthy weight. Avoid free-feeding unless your cat self-regulates well, which many do not. Use our calorie calculator with your cat's actual weight for a personalized number.

Males: 8-12 lbs (3.6–5.4 kg). Females: 6-8 lbs (2.7–3.6 kg). Feel for ribs along the sides. They should be easy to find under a thin layer of flesh. View from above: a visible waist narrowing behind the ribs indicates healthy condition.

The Siamese's most significant breed-specific health concern is amyloidosis. Amyloidosis involves abnormal protein deposits in organs, particularly the liver or kidneys. There is no cure, but early detection through regular blood work can help manage the condition. Other conditions to monitor include asthma, megaesophagus, progressive retinal atrophy. Not every Siamese will develop these conditions, but awareness and regular vet checkups make a real difference.

Moderate play needs that most owners can easily meet. One or two interactive play sessions of 10-15 minutes daily, combined with access to a cat tree and window perch, keeps this breed content. They enjoy play but are equally happy relaxing. Every cat, regardless of breed, benefits from some daily play and enrichment. Even five minutes of chasing a wand toy is better than nothing.
