About BreedLookup

What this site does

BreedLookup is a breed data and nutrition tool site for dog and cat owners. You look up your breed, you get the numbers: ideal weight range, daily calorie needs, how much food to put in the bowl, common health concerns, exercise requirements, and care tips.

The site also has standalone calculators for calorie needs, feeding amounts, ideal weight assessment, and age conversion for both dogs and cats. Every tool is free, requires no account, and works with any brand of food.

How the data works

Calorie calculations use the Resting Energy Requirement (RER) formula from the National Research Council's Nutrient Requirements of Dogs and Cats (2006). This is the same methodology used by veterinary nutritionists at Ohio State, Tufts, and UC Davis. The formula is RER = 70 x (body weight in kg)0.75, multiplied by species-specific and life-stage-specific activity factors.

Breed weight ranges come from American Kennel Club (AKC) breed standards for dogs and The International Cat Association (TICA) standards for cats. Age conversion uses the epigenetic formula published in Cell Systems (2020) by researchers at UC San Diego, combined with the AVMA size-adjusted method and AAHA 2019 Canine Life Stage Guidelines.

Body condition scoring follows the WSAVA 9-point scale used in veterinary practice worldwide.

Who built this

BreedLookup was created by Peter M., a lifelong animal lover from Tacoma, WA. He and his family share their home with two British Shorthairs, Jack and Winston, who serve as the site's unofficial quality assurance department (mostly by napping on the keyboard at critical moments).

Peter is not a veterinarian. The tools on this site use published veterinary formulas and breed standards, cited on every page. This site is not a substitute for professional veterinary advice. Always consult your vet for decisions about your pet's health and nutrition.
